Friends of Mount Athos – iconography conference 16-18 October

We’re excited to let you know that places (residential and online) are still available for this year’s Friends of Mount Athos (FoMA) biennial conference which is taking place at Madingley in Cambridge from 16-18 October. 

This highly visual conference is called ‘Holy Beauty: The Art and Iconography of Mount Athos’ , and will look at different aspects of the artistic work of the monks past and present and consider the  theological significance of iconography and other forms of monastic art. The conference will feature eight sessions by an expert panel of speakers from around the world, including the renowned British iconographer, Aidan Hart. 

I would be grateful if you would bring the attached conference brochure to the attention  of members of your congregation and others possibly via email or your church newsletter.  Residential places for the weekend are available as well as day passes and online registration to access the  conference livestream on YouTube. The brochure contains details of  all the session topics and speakers, together with prices, and how to book.

The Friends of Mount Athos ( www.athosfriends.co.uk ) is a UK charity which exists to support the monasteries and help protect the natural environment of the Holy Mountain in Greece together with widening awareness of the Orthodox faith in all its aspects.

Please find attached a message from His Eminence Archbishop Nikitas following the recent visit of His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.

His Eminence wishes to express his heartfelt gratitude to the clergy, communities, Archons, sponsors, donors and faithful whose support and participation contributed to the success of this historic visit, and to encourage us all to move forward together in unity and solidarity as we continue the work and mission of our Holy Archdiocese.

Grace and peace be with you and all your loved ones in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.


The past week and all the blessings it brought are now like a dream in the past.  The visit of His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew is now part of our ecclesiastical history in the United Kingdom and we thank God for this and the many other blessings He gives us.


I wish to thank all of you for your support and your participation in the many events we hosted as an Archdiocese.   We achieved these things as a united community, working together for the common good – the progress of our Church and our community.  I believe and am sure will agree with me that this visit showed what we can do as an Archdiocese.  I thank those who worked with me, the Sponsors, the Donors, and each and every person of our community.  

Thank you!


Now, we look to the future and let us move forward in a spirit of solidarity.  There is so much more to do, as we look to build and grow.

Patriarchal visit of His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew

We have been asked if anyone would like to join the Patriarchal visit of his all Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. 

This is in celebration of his Eminence Archbishop Nikitas. 

The price of the ticket is £120 each person 

It will be hosted at: 

London Hilton, Park Lane, London. 

On: Tuesday 15th September 2026. 

If you are interested, please let one of the committee members know as soon as possible, as tickets will need to be reserved. 

The ticket price will need to be paid upfront/in advance if you would like to to attend.

Explore Historic Monastery: Coach Trip from Eastbourne

The church is organising a coach trip from Eastbourne to the Monastery of Saint John the Baptist (also known as the Community of Saint John the Baptist) in Essex on Saturday 4th July. There will be a tour of the grounds, a visit to the newly consecrated Church of Saint Sophrony, the bookshop, the burial ground of St Sophrony and much more.
