Friends of Mount Athos – iconography conference 16-18 October

Posted on by

Dear fellow Christian

We’re excited to let you know that places (residential and online) are still available for this year’s Friends of Mount Athos (FoMA) biennial conference which is taking place at Madingley in Cambridge from 16-18 October.

This highly visual conference is called ‘Holy Beauty: The Art and Iconography of Mount Athos’ , and will look at different aspects of the artistic work of the monks past and present and consider the  theological significance of iconography and other forms of monastic art. The conference will feature eight sessions by an expert panel of speakers from around the world, including the renowned British iconographer, Aidan Hart.

I would be grateful if you would bring the attached conference brochure to the attention  of members of your congregation and others possibly via email or your church newsletter.  Residential places for the weekend are available as well as day passes and online registration to access the  conference livestream on YouTube. The brochure contains details of  all the session topics and speakers, together with prices, and how to book.

The Friends of Mount Athos ( www.athosfriends.co.uk ) is a UK charity which exists to support the monasteries and help protect the natural environment of the Holy Mountain in Greece together with widening awareness of the Orthodox faith in all its aspects.

I do hope you can help – please get in touch with me if you would like any more information or visit the FoMA website at https://www.athosfriends.org/madingley-2026-holy-beauty-art-and-iconography-on-mount-athos/

With very best wishes

The Rev. Clergy of the ArchdioceseEsteemed Chairmen, Trustees, Archons, and Wardens of the CommunitiesBeloved Faithful – Sisters and Brothers in Christ

Grace and peace be with you and all your loved ones in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The past week and all the blessings it brought are now like a dream in the past.  The visit of His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew is now part of our ecclesiastical history in the United Kingdom and we thank God for this and the many other blessings He gives us.

I wish to thank all of you for your support and your participation in the many events we hosted as an Archdiocese.   We achieved these things as a united community, working together for the common good – the progress of our Church and our community.  I believe and am sure will agree with me that this visit showed what we can do as an Archdiocese.  I thank those who worked with me, the Sponsors, the Donors, and each and every person of our community.

Thank you!

Now, we look to the future and let us move forward in a spirit of solidarity.  There is so much more to do, as we look to build and grow.

May God bless all.

In His service

Archdiocesan Christmas Events

Posted on by

Dearly beloved in the Lord,

I would like to share with you the upcoming  Archdiocesan events scheduled to take place during the Christmas Season, and to encourage you to promote these wonderful initiatives in your parishes.  Those able to travel, please make every effort to attend with members of your congregation.  Registration is not necessary.

Our festal gatherings are wonderful opportunities for us to exchange greetings, as well as to request in person the paternal blessings and prayers of our archpastor, His Eminence Archbishop Nikitas of Thyateira and Great Britain, and by doing so, we  demonstrate genuinely the ecclesiastical ethos of the Orthodox.

London-area clergy are strongly encouraged to attend both events with members of their committees and congregations

1)       Archdiocesan Christmas Concert sponsored by Christos Lazari Foundation on 19th December 2024, at the Cathedral of the Divine Wisdom.

2)       Archdiocesan Christmas Open House, 22nd December 2024, at the newly renovated Thyateira House.

I have attached the two formal flyers for your further information and so that you may promote and post these on your community’s bulletin boards and social media.

Looking forward to meeting you in the weeks to come, I remain with many thanks and my heartfelt prayers for a blessed and spiritually uplifting Christmas Fast.

Fraternally yours,

+Archim. Nephon Tsimalis

Youth Lenten Retreat

Posted on by

I am writing to kindly remind you of our upcoming COTY Lenten Retreat in two weeks’ time, on Saturday, 13 April 2024, at St. Mary’s Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Camberwell. This retreat is a wonderful opportunity for all young people aged 16-35 to deepen their faith, learn about Orthodoxy, and connect with like-minded individuals.

We’re excited to have His Eminence Archbishop Nikitas as our main speaker, followed by the Very Revd Archimandrite Peter, Abbot of the Holy Stavropegic Monastery of St John the Baptist, as well as the Revd Œconomos Kristian Akselberg.

We have also added 2 liturgical tradition workshops to the program, with a ‘craft your own prayer rope’ session, and a presentation on the history of illustrated manuscripts in the British Isles.

The day will start with a celebration of the Divine Liturgy in English at 9:30 am, followed by breakfast, insightful talks, and lunch—all provided courtesy of a COTY subsidy.

We believe this event is a fantastic way for our youth to engage with their faith during Lent, and we still have spaces available for attendees. On behalf of the COTY trustees, we would be very grateful if you could help us by sharing our event poster and the registration link on your community’s Facebook page and with the young members of your community:

Event Details: https://www.facebook.com/events/454283380280296?active_tab=about

Registration Link: https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/coty/t-gagxzoy

I have also attached a flier advertising the retreat to this e-mail — it would be greatly appreciated if you could print some copies and display them at their parishes, and also share the poster on social media.

Wishing you a blessed and spiritually refreshing Lenten season.

Prayerfully yours,

Fr. Nephon Tsimalis
